Project Overview

Landscape-scale research examining the impacts on forest flora, structure and fuel of frequently-applied, low intensity fire, relative to infrequent high intensity fire and a long-unburnt control.

Since 2019, DEECA has implemented a program of landscape-scale mosaic burning in foothills forests along the drier ridges of the Northern Ramps in the Otways. 

The aim has been to reduce bushfire risk and shift vegetation structure by increasing fire frequency, favouring shorter-lived annual plants over woody shrubs. This has created a complex patchwork of fire histories across ridgelines, while adjacent gullies and slopes continue to follow standard prescriptions.

In 2024, in partnership with the University of Melbourne, we established a dedicated research trial at the site. Using systematic protocols, data is being collected to assess vegetation, fauna, and fuel dynamics across areas subject to different fire regimes. This provides one of the first opportunities to rigorously test the ecological impacts of mosaic burning in herb-rich foothill forests.

The Northern Ramps study is testing the effects of low-intensity, high-frequency fire on forest structure, species composition, and bushfire risk. Results are expected to provide an evidence base for evaluating mosaic burning as an adaptation pathway - including its implications for both biodiversity outcomes and fuel dynamics. 

Importantly, the trial design has been set up in a way that allows for long-term tracking, offering opportunities to revisit plots at decadal scales and to expand monitoring to fauna and adjacent vegetation types over time.

Delivered operationally by DEECA. Research originally funded through Resilient Forests, and now incorporated into broader work on State and Transition models through ARC. Uni of Melb leading the research in partnership with CEC and DEECA.
