Managing feral pigs the focus of upcoming CEC workshops

News > Our Patron and Board

Back in April, we gathered with our many project partners and collaborators to celebrate the success of the Otways Feral Pig Program and launch the next phase.

The event provided an opportunity for stakeholders to engage with organisations working on feral pig management, to meet the recently expanded CEC feral pig team, and to hear how we’re rolling out the second phase of the program – with funding from The Ian Potter Foundation and Agriculture Victoria.

We had an update on the feral pig situation nationally from Dr Heather Channon (the National Feral Pig Management Coordinator); Michael Mackenzie and Erin Nash from Parks Victoria shared some of the successes and challenges they’ve had managing pigs in the National Park; landholder Margie Drake shared how the use of the HogEye Camera trapping system was so effective at removing pigs from her farm; and Rebecca Toohey, a PhD candidate at the University of Melbourne, shared her insights into some of the social science behind feral pig management.

Starting in July, we’ll be holding workshops across the Otways to increase land manager knowledge and capacity around feral pig management.

We will be opening up places in our local and online training workshops soon, if you’d like to receive updates about these opportunities, and the project more generally, please email your details to James james.templeton@conservationecologycentre.org.
