Restoring Otways Estuaries

Commencing in 2025, Restoring Otway Estuaries is a landscape-scale initiative focused on healing and strengthening the ecological and cultural values of estuarine systems along the Great Ocean Road. 

Delivered through workshops, field days, educational resources, and on-Country engagement, the program creates space for Traditional Owner voices and priorities while building skills and understanding across the broader community, supporting the community to care for Country through best-practice revegetation, wetland restoration, and sustainable land management.

A focus on the Lower Aire Valley addresses growing estuarine flood risks and impacts on farmland and cultural landscapes.  In partnership with Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation, we will develop adaptation pathways that reflect cultural and ecological values, while exploring innovative financing opportunities such as blue and teal carbon and biodiversity markets.  The project will also pilot an impact accounting toolkit designed to support nature-based solutions that are transparent, inclusive, and outcomes-focused.

Through strong partnerships, applied research and sharing of knowledge, Restoring Otway Estuaries represents a model for Country-centred climate adaptation – where restoration of natural systems goes hand in hand with cultural strength and community resilience.
