Help Koalas call Australia home – forever

“Vital koala habitat in the Great Ocean Road region is in catastrophic decline – the woodlands have been dying and the koalas that depend upon them are at great risk”
Dr Jack Pascoe, Conservation & Research Manager, Conservation Ecology Centre

For the last few years we at the CEC have been working hard to turn this around and this weekend the cavalry came to join us for the second Big Otway Tree Plant! 100 willing volunteers and nearly 8,000 trees safely in the ground – what a great effort! Thank you so much to everyone.

The 8,000 trees planted this weekend, together with the 80,000 we planted over the last three years, will make a real difference. There was also lots of work done to maintain the guards around the existing little trees to protect them and keep them growing strongly. This is the woodland of the future!

This week the koalas of Cape Otway are being visited by a team of wildlife vets from the Department of Environment, Land, Water & Planning (DELWP) and Melbourne Zoo. The examinations the vets will carry out will be vital for assessing and understanding the koalas’ current health levels across habitat of different qualities – information which will help keep the koalas healthy into the future.

We continue to protect and restore habitat, developing habitat restoration techniques and conducting critical research to build understanding of koala ecology to ensure long term conservation. But we’ll need your help. Together we can make sure that koalas can call Australia home – forever.

If you’re interested in helping out please drop an email to lizzie@conservationecologycentre.org with your mailing address and I’ll be delighted to send you more information. And if you prefer to stay in touch electronically you can subscribe to our enewsletter!

Many thanks,

Lizzie, Shayne, Jack and the CEC Team
